Chapter Eighteen

The phone was on the move for nearly an hour. It went to Exmouth harbour, then into a pizza place before coming to what seemed to be a permanent halt in a house in the town centre.

Charlotte looked up the address. “It says it’s owned by a building company.”

“It’s probably being renovated.”

“I’ll look on Google Maps.” She put in the address and examined the photos. “This mightn’t be any help: the photos were taken eight years ago. That’s way too old to be any use.”

“We need to check the place out,” Angus said.

Charlotte stood up. “All right, let’s go.”

It took them nearly half an hour to get to Exmouth. Angus parked a few doors down, on the opposite side of the road. “It looks different to Google Maps,” he said.

The house in question was a tall, brick-built end terrace with boarded-up windows.

“There may be squatters in there. Which means we need to be very careful when we go in.”

Charlotte raised her eyebrows. “I thought we weren’t going in.”

Angus glanced at Charlotte. “We’ll keep watch for a while to see if anyone comes in or out. If I think it’s safe, we’ll go in.”

An hour later, nothing had happened. Charlotte huffed. “Maybe I should have just left it. Petty theft's bad, but it isn’t worth this amount of our time. Shouldn’t we be looking for Lawrence? Or at least spending some more time with your parents?”

They went up to the front door and Angus tried it. It was open, so they crept in.

Inside was a mess. The walls were dirty and there was no carpet, just bare floorboards. The stairs were uncarpeted, too, and a number of rooms led off the hall, including what looked like a very dirty kitchen straight ahead.

Charlotte took out her phone to locate the burner phone. “It’s upstairs,” she whispered.

Angus went up first. The first floor had three rooms. Charlotte shook her head, then pointed upstairs. The top floor had two rooms. Charlotte moved her head towards the door on the left, which was ajar. Angus knocked, then pushed the door.

Inside was a teenage girl sitting on a bed. Her greasy brown hair was in a ponytail and she wore a T-shirt and sweatpants. “Who are you?” she said, scowling at them.

“No, who are you?” Charlotte said.

“None of your business.”

“We’re private investigators and you have my mobile phone,” Charlotte said, before Angus could open his mouth.

The girl stood up and glanced at the door. Angus and Charlotte moved in front of it.

“I ain’t got nothing,” she said, eyeing them warily.

Charlotte tapped her phone and another phone rang.

“That’s my phone. You stole it from the locker on the seafront.”

The ringing was coming from a plastic bag on the table in the corner. Angus went towards it and the girl bolted for the door. Charlotte grabbed her as she was heading through it. Angus helped her pull the girl back into the room. Charlotte shut the door firmly.

The girl shook herself free, then sat back on the bed.
